<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The author makes an attempt to give a historically correct account of leisure activities of German immigrants in Chicago at the turn of the twentieth century. Based on the original primary sources such as guides to Chicago, the press, memoirs by the contemporaries, the article depicts the forms of cultural life of Chicago’s German-American community. The attention is focused on the history of gymnastic clubs (or turnverein ), musical choirs and other forms of leisure activities in Chicago’s German neighborhoods. The impact of German cultural heritage on the cultural life of Chicago, particularly, on classical music, is analyzed. The author describes challenges of adaptation of some German leisure activities in the adopted country.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>досуговая культура</kwd><kwd>немецкие иммигранты</kwd><kwd>Чикаго</kwd><kwd>хоровые общества</kwd><kwd>клуб</kwd><kwd>leisure culture</kwd><kwd>German immigrants</kwd><kwd>Chicago</kwd><kwd>musical choirs</kwd><kwd>clubs</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">As Others See Chicago: Impressions of Visitors, 1673–1933/ compiled and edited by Bessie Louise Pierce.
